Globalisation and Labour Markets Research Paper 2008 / 22 Services Offshoring and Wages : Evidence from Micro Data

چکیده

This paper investigates the effects of services offshoring on wages using individual level data combined with industry information on offshoring. Our results show that services offshoring affects the real wage of low and medium skilled individuals negatively. By contrast, skilled workers benefit from services offshoring in terms of higher real wages. Hence, offshoring has contributed to a widening of the wage gap between skilled and less skilled workers. This result is obtained while controlling for individual and sectoral observed and unobserved heterogeneity. In particular, our empirical model also controls for the impact of technological change and offshoring of materials. JEL classification: F16, J31, C23

We examine empirically the effect of international outsourcing on labour demand at the level of the individual plant. We do so by estimating a dynamic model of plant level labour demand, using a Generalised Method of Moments estimator. We use plant level data for the Irish Electronics sector, an industry that has expanded rapidly over the last decade and that has witnessed significant offshorin...

Globalisation and Labour Markets Research Paper 2005 / 11 Migration , Trade and Wages

This study adopts a GNP function approach in order to examine the impact of migrant labour on domestic factors of production in the United Kingdom. We also examine the relationship between imports and migrants, which are two different facets of globalisation. We find that an increase in the number of unskilled migrants reduces the wages of unskilled domestic workers. However the quantitative im...

Globalisation and Labour Markets Research Paper 2002 / 34 A General Model of Fair Wages in an Open Economy

We analyse the behaviour of a multi-sector small open economy with involuntary unemployment due to fair wages. The equilibrium level of employment depends in an intuitively appealing way on the sectoral structure of the economy. It is shown that induced changes in employment are a driving force behind many of the comparative static results. Fair wage variants of the Heckscher-Ohlin and the Rica...

Trade-adjustment Costs in OECD Labour Markets: A Mountain or a Molehill?

Concerns that international trade and investment represent a growing threat to workers in OECD countries currently run very high. How many workers are losing their jobs as a result of rising imports or the " delocalisation " of jobs? Are trade-displaced workers able to move into new jobs which offer pay comparable to that on the jobs lost to international competition, or are these layoffs a pat...
